ABOUT

Born in 1995, Aurélien Hallopeau is a French composer who lives in Lausanne, Switzerland. He currently mainly writes for choir and voice, while keeping composing for other instruments. Also an engineer in the space industry, he sings as a baritone-bass in several ensembles such as the chamber choir Ensemble vocal Évohé in Lausanne.

Aurélien studied the piano at Conservatoire de Courbevoie, France, with Jean-François Manzoni, and followed there harmony, analysis and composition classes with French composer Alexandre Benéteau. He is currently studying choir direction at Conservatoire de Lausanne with Romain Mayor and Dominique Tille. Alongside music, Aurélien Hallopeau also studied engineering and has a degree from École CentraleSupélec, Paris, France and a Master of Science from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

Aurélien Hallopeau’s compositions have been performed in several countries in Europe and in the USA. He regularly works with French and Swiss ensembles such as Ensemble vocal Évohé, conducted by Fruzsina Szuromi, or professional vocal ensemble L’Horizon Chimérique, conducted by Benoît Dubu. Other works were premiered in London as part of the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music, in Brussels by women’s choir Ensemble vocal Aziliz, In Poland by ensemble VeraVoce, and in Texas, USA, by Chorus Austin.

Several of his choral works have been awarded prizes and premiered during international composition competitions, such as Petit Bestiaire (“1st Prize of the Jury” of Eufonia-Bordeaux’s composition competition, Bordeaux, France, October 2021) ; Gaudeat iuventus (“Best composition by a young composer”, 2° Concurso de Composicion Coral Carmina Nova, Malaga, Spain, April 2021) ; Sub tuum praesidium (Winner of the Young composer division, Chorus Austin’s Composers Competition 2023, Texas, USA, March 2023) ; Surge amica mea, et veni and Rimango sol (21° Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Corale Seghizzi 2023)

In January 2023, Analemme, a longer and more ambitious composition for choir and percussion, setting excerpts from astronomy treaties discussing the Sun's trajectory and the phenomenon of the equinox, received the "Prix de la Ville de Firminy" at the 3rd edition of festival FestyVocal’s composition competition, Firminy, France, and was premiered in November 2023 by reknown Swedish choir Allmänna Sången, conducted by Maria Goundorina.

Aurélien Hallopeau was also awarded the 1st prize of Concours International Léopold Bellan 2023, Paris, France, for Errance, a piece for oboe, violin, alto and cello. In July 2022, Aurélien Hallopeau also participated in Cap Ferret Music Festival, France, as composer in residence, where instrumental compositions, including pieces for harp, flute, and piano, were premiered.
